Taking payments with Stripe

Connect your site's buttons to your Stripe account by talking to Cortex, in test mode first and then for real.

Cortex reads your site, works out what you sell and connects your buttons to take payments with your own Stripe account. You review, answer a few questions and paste your key at the end.

Berse takes no cut of your sales: the money goes to your Stripe account and you only pay Stripe's fees. This integration is for editable sites.

Before you start

  • A Stripe account. Creating one is free.
  • Your site showing what you sell and its prices. If they aren't there yet, ask Cortex for them first.

Connecting payments

Open Take payments

In Studio, open the Integrations panel and tap Take payments. You can also type /stripe in the Cortex bar. Press Start with Cortex.

Answer the questions

Cortex suggests what's for sale, at what price and how: one-off payment, subscription, catalogue with cart, or bookings. Each question has options with one marked Recommended. If you prefer, answer in your own words.

Review what you'll charge for

Press Review and connect. Under What you'll charge for you see each product and its button. On the canvas, each button says what it charges for.

Pick a button if one is missing

If a product has no button, press Pick on the page and click the right button on the canvas. If there isn't one, Berse can add it.

Paste your key and apply

Copy your key from Stripe, paste it into Stripe key and press Connect and apply. Berse checks it and stores it encrypted in your site's hosting; Berse doesn't keep it.

Publish

Press Publish now so payments reach your site.

Options Cortex offers

  • Confirmation page: Create a confirmation page (recommended). It's the page buyers return to after paying.
  • Cart: buy several things in one payment, with Pickup at the business, Delivery to an address, free delivery above an amount, and a Minimum order. Subscriptions are paid on their own.
  • One product, many buttons: for example, "Book a spot" on every class. Each button remembers which class it is, and Stripe shows it at checkout.

Stripe emails the buyer a receipt if you turn on receipts in your Stripe settings (Settings → Customer emails).

Depends on your plan

On any plan you can connect a test key (it starts with sk_test_) and try everything. Taking real payments, with a live key, comes with Starter or higher. When you upgrade, you just change the key.

Testing payments

In the Studio preview, payments aren't active, because your key never leaves your site's hosting. Test on your published site with one of Stripe's test cards.

Disconnecting

In the payments panel, Disconnect payments stops your buttons from charging and deletes your key from the hosting. Publish afterwards so it reaches your site. Berse tells you which notice to delete in your Stripe dashboard.
