Connecting your own domain
Put your site at your own address, like yourbusiness.com, by adding a few records at your domain provider.
With a custom domain, your site opens at your own address, like yourbusiness.com, instead of your free Berse address. It works for editable and Made by Cortex sites. You need a domain you've already bought (from GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare or another provider) and a few minutes.
Before you start
- Your site has to be published. If it isn't yet, see Publishing and updating your site.
- Have access to your domain provider's dashboard to hand.
Depends on your plan
A custom domain comes with any paid plan, from Hobby up. On the Free plan your site stays at its free address. See Plans.
Connecting your domain
Open Domain & hosting
In Studio, click your project's name (top left) and choose Domain & hosting. On a Made by Cortex site, open it with the gear at the top.
Type your domain
Under Custom domain, type your domain (for example, floresana.com) and press Connect.
Copy the records
Berse shows you every record you need, all at once: a TXT record called _berse, one for your domain and one for www. Each has its type, name and value, with a button to copy it.
Add them at your provider
Go to your provider's DNS dashboard and add each record exactly as shown. Berse recognises many providers and tells you where that option is in yours.
Wait for it to go live
Berse checks on its own every 20 seconds. When it finds the records, it connects the domain and turns on HTTPS. You can also press Check now.
How to write the names
Berse shows the short names, the way most dashboards want them: _berse, www and @. Under each one you'll see the full name in case your provider asks for it that way.
@ means the domain itself. Some providers want the name left empty instead of @.
With and without www
Berse connects both at once. If you connect floresana.com, it also connects www.floresana.com, which sends your visitors to the first one. If you remove one, the one that points to it is removed too.
If it takes a while or doesn't go live
- It's taking a while: DNS changes can take from a few minutes to a few hours. If you close the window, come back later, type your domain again and press Connect: the records are the same.
- "Delete these records at your provider": your domain still points somewhere else, often the registrar's parking page. Delete them and your site will show up.
- Cloudflare: keep the cloud grey ("DNS only") on your site's records. With the orange cloud, your site won't go live.
A tip for DNS dashboards
If your provider adds the domain to the end of the name by itself, type only _berse or www. If you type the full name, it gets doubled and won't work.
